Giallo (2009)



As we move into October 4, I was able to sit back and watch a modern tale from horror icon Dario Argento.  With only 27 days left until Halloween the countdown continues with 2009s Giallo.


Plot/ In Italy, a woman fears her sister may have been kidnapped. Inspector Enzo Avolfi fears its worse. They team up to rescue her from a sadistic killer known only as Yellow.


This Argento entry (OK semi-Argento, as the maestro disowned the film because of creative differences) is pretty much a basic thriller featuring only a touch of his stylizations. Sure, the acting is solid and there are some decent moments with some decently suspenseful atmosphere, but that is truly the only thing this flick has to offer.  For me, the pacing seemed a bit off throughout and that truly took away from the overall feel of the movie. In the end, this one had a lot of potential, but for whatever reason that never came to fruition. I was lucky enough to see it for free on Demand, and that is the only way I would recommend it.

There are times when you watch a movie that is based on a true story, that you scratch your head and just say no way. Some of the depraved, disgusting and violent acts depicted in movies just cannot be true. One such film that left me feeling this way was The Afflicted from Midnight Releasing. Creep (2004)

Last night, I decided to get back into some horror movie enjoyment by hanging out on Netflix. After some time and debate, I decided on the British horror flick Creep from 2004. Plot/ Trapped in a London subway station, a woman is being pursued by a potential attacker as she heads into the unknown labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city's streets. When I saw this on Netflix, I could not put a finger on why I was not truly excited about watching this one. Now that I have seen Creep, I can understand my lack of excitement. This movie is not creepy at all; in fact other than the isolationism fear it creates, it lacks a gripping atmosphere. This linear, cliché driven storyline is decent and does feature a touch of violence. However, there is not much more to offer. The acting and script are only OK, and the ending does nothing. Really, there is nothing that makes this film stand-out in the crowded horror genre.

Super Shark (2011)

If you are avid reader of my blog, than you have read that, my daughter Jillian loves animal attack flicks, especially ones that have sharks in them. Fortunately for us, the SyFy Channel, The Asylum and other production companies have gone overboard recently with a plethora of shark attack flicks for us to choose from. Unfortunately, many of those feature hideous CGI and laughable to terrible storylines for our viewing pleasure. I guess it could be worse; she could be a Twilight fan. With another request for a shark movie pending, we decided to sit-down and watch 2011s, Super Shark. Plot/ An offshore drilling accident triggers the release of a giant prehistoric shark. When marine biologist Kat Carmichael arrives, she runs up against corporate front man Roger Wade, who plots with Stewart to disrupt her investigation. Yet another cheesy SyFy Channel low-budget shark attack flick is just what I needed, and to top it off, this one may be the worst of the bunch
