Oculus (2013)

Last night I finally had a chance to relax after a miserable drive home. Luckily for me, Bren had a made a trip to the video store and found me a couple of gems. First up for review is one of the movies that I have been looking forward to, the 2013 supernatural themed Oculus.

Plot/ A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

Lately, I have struggled to find a movie that has told a layered story. That all changed last night when I finally watched Oculus. While not overly scary, or gory, this slow burn does a great job a mixing flashbacks with present day events to conjure a detailed storyline. The atmosphere is dark and heavy, the performances (especially the children) are solid, and there was enough creepiness to at least make me smile. Yes, some of the surreal moments clash with the flashbacks and there were some uneven characterizations, but those were only minor issues. In the end, this was one of the more entertaining and interesting horror flicks to come around in some time. Sure, it may feel a touch cliché in some spots, but it was a lot more than that and one of the best supernatural driven movies to come out in some time. Check this one out!
